Hello all....
If you've been on this newsletter list for a while, you know I don't write about things that aren't directly related to the Aftermath Project. But I wanted to make an exception today, to tell you about a documentary that's just reaching theaters -- "Restrepo." It's a war documentary, set in Afghanistan, a brilliant, courageous portrayal of soldiers and what they endure and who they are. It also brilliantly raises aftermath issues, in interviews conducted with the men not long after they finally leave the outpost they manned in the Korengal Valley, which was once dubbed "the most dangerous place on earth."
My friend and fellow photographer Tim Hetherington co-directed the film with writer Sebastian Junger. I saw it at Sundance, where it premiered in January, and again at a Sundance event in Los Angeles a few months later. Any of you who know me, know that I'm committed to covering the aftermath of conflict -- "the other half" of the story of war -- but I can't tell you how important I think this film is, both for what it illumines about the lives of soldiers in the midst of conflict, and for the questions it raises about the costs of what they have endured.
Tim recently sent an email out about the film. I've pasted an excerpt here. I hope you'll have the opportunity to see this film, or, if it's not playing near you, at least visit the website and watch the trailer.
"Hi there
After many years, our feature-length documentary film Restrepo is finally opening on general release in US theaters from 25th June (..UK/Europe to follow..) As you may know, the film business is precarious and the movie now needs your support at this critical time to reach as many people as possible. You can help by viewing the trailer at: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/independent/restrepo/ and if you feel inclined, then please forward this link to your own mailing lists to help spread the word.
You can also sign up to support the film at our facebook page at www.facebook.com/restrepothemovie
Thanks for your help

As for the Aftermath Project, we are working on the design for "War is Only Half the Story, Vol Three,"; we've raised almost the entire $15,000 we need to match the $!5,000 grant we're receiving from the National Endowment for the Arts to help publish the book.
Applications for our 2011 grant will be online sometime in mid-August; as always, you'll be notifed via this newsletter when it's available.
Kind regards,
Sara
